Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Chiropractic adjustment?
Chiropractic adjustments involve hands-on techniques to remove interferences between the brain and body, primarily by removing stress from the spine and correcting vertebral subluxations (misalignments).
The nervous system controls all bodily processes and functions, and is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and the nerves of the body. When the spine is misaligned, it causes stress and interference upon the nervous system, disrupting the flow of messages between the brain and body, leading to a breakdown in the body's communication system. Chiropractic adjustments remove the stress and interference from the nervous system, allowing the body to function optimally.
Will the adjustment hurt?
Chiropractic adjustments are beneficial and do not hurt. However, if you are already experiencing significant pain or restrictions, then the adjustment process may initially cause some discomfort. This is because the body can be resistant to change at the beginning of your health journey. Typically, people may experience some soreness, aches, or fatigue following an adjustment. This is due to the body entering a parasympathetic state, allowing for relaxation, and healing. It's essential to remember that the primary objective of an adjustment is to remove stress and tension and promote relaxation within the body, ultimately leading to a greater sense of ease.
Who benefits from wellness care?
Everyone can benefit from wellness chiropractic care. No matter your age, gender or what you do with your life, we believe chiropractic is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle.
How often should I receive adjustments?
This is a personal choice and is totally up to you and what you feel comfortable with. However, your chiropractor will recommend the most suitable timing when they know your body’s ability to adapt to everyday stressors. Some patients visit the clinic every week as they really notice the benefits of regular care. However, others may find that they get the most benefit from visiting every four to six weeks.
What is the cracking / popping sound?
Also called a cavitation, the satisfying sound that you hear when your joint is "cracking" is simply the gas being released. The joints in the spine contain synovial fluid and within this is a small bubble of gas. When the adjustment is delivered, there is a pressure change within the joint and the gas bubble disperses, making the ‘popping’ noise. Rest assured, it's not the sound of your bones crunching.
How long will my adjustment take?
The adjustment process is quick and efficient, taking only a few minutes. It’s important to understand it’s not the duration of the adjustment that promotes healing, but instead the consistent removal of interferences within the nervous system that allows the body to heal. Over the next few hours, days, weeks, and months your body will continue to heal.
How long does it take to feel better?
Each person is unique and responds differently, and therefore so is their care plan. It depends on numerous factors, such as the time your body has been under stress and your lifestyle choices, that can determine how long it takes to feel better. You are doing the healing, it's about creating a healing environment in your physical, emotional, and chemical states within your body Just like training to get in shape or to run a marathon, consistency is key as each visit builds on the previous one. Every visit counts as a building block towards becoming a better version of yourself.
Do I need to remove any clothing for my appointment?
No, you do not need to remove any clothing except shoes and heavy coats. However, in your initial consultation, you may need to remove any metal for an X-Ray.
Can I see a Chiropractor if I'm pregnant?
Absolutely. Chiropractic care is extremely safe to get whilst you are pregnant and is highly recommended for you and your babies! As your baby grows heavier, pregnancy puts more stress up on body’s skeletal structure. Fortunately, chiropractic care can be an excellent way to remove the stress from your spine, keeping you well-aligned and moving properly.
Being checked by a chiropractor can be highly beneficial as it helps to keep your pelvis in the correct position, allowing more space for your baby to grow and move around more comfortably.
Should I still see a Chiropractor if I'm not in any pain?
Yes! Just as we see dentists regularly for check-ups, a chiropractic check-up is essential to maintaining optimal spinal and nervous system function. Pain is not a reliable indicator of how well the body and nervous system are functioning and can often show up after years of stress on the spine.
It’s better to take a preventative approach to care, rather than reacting when you are in pain.
